She’s looking forward to living in an assisted arrangement with other women, says Debra Lee, director of Jackson County Legal Services, the agency that recently became the designated guardian. "She has plans to go to college, to take music theory classes, to make it on her own," says Lee. Agency personnel are anxious about the woman’s future. As Oregon social services face dramatic cuts, there likely will be few resources to assist this woman and others like her. As the holidays approach, however, the woman is trying to achieve a little normalcy. She has a 19-year-old son who lives in Douglas County. After years of no contact, the pair recently reunited. The woman would love to see her son for Christmas, but neither has money for the trip to Medford. A donation of a Greyhound bus ticket and a night or two at a local motel would make this holiday brighter for both mother and son, Lee says. "We really want her to have a relationship with her son," she says. "And to have something during the holidays to look forward to."
