The Comets responded to their coach’s focus Tuesday night in a 54-36 victory over Yreka, Calif. Crater (2-1) limited Yreka to 12 first-half points and outrebounded the Miners, 36-20. "The kids played with a lot of intensity in the first half on defense," said Meunier. "We made it tough on them. And to outrebound a team by that much was a big factor in the game." Jay Slezak paced the Comets with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. The senior wing added eight rebounds. Meunier was particularly pleased with the performance of 6-foot-5 junior center Lenny Pierce, who hauled down 11 rebounds. Advertisement "Lenny did a nice job on both ends," said Meunier. "He boxed out well and controlled the boards on the defensive end." Crater also received double-figure scoring efforts from Preston Tate (12 points) and Austin Wiersma (11 points). The Grizzlies (0-2) got 11 points from sophomore post Josh Cornelius, eight points and nine rebounds from junior wing Corey Costantino and eight points and eight rebounds from senior wing David Morris. Shaun Ash, Darren Clark and Andy Shannon contributed 12 points each for the Knights, who dropped their first game after a pair of victories. Klamath Union (1-1) led just 41-37 after three periods. Vaughn had 11 points and six rebounds. Austin Grant paced St. Mary’s (1-2) with 13 points and seven rebounds. Freshman post Garrett Fiddler didn’t play for the Crusaders because of a foot injury. ST. Wilkinson, a junior forward, added six assists and six steals. Senior point guard Zack Heater handed out seven assists and Bowdoin contributed five rebounds and four steals for the Warriors (1-1).
