Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 3, 2005 Big third quarter boosts Black Tornado to victory SOC Girls Basketball North Medford used a suffocating fullcourt press to break open a close game at halftime and roll to a lopsided victory over North Eugene in girls nonconference basketball Friday. Junior point guard Rachael Barry scored 12 points and 6-foot-2 junior post Lauren Berger had 10 points, 14 rebounds and three steals as the Black Tornado posted a 52-36 victory over the Highlanders in the North gym. North Medford led just 19-14 at halftime but went on a 27-7 run in the third period to turn the game into a rout. "We came out in the second half with a lot more intensity," North Medford coach Tim Karrick said. "We forced some turnovers and attacked the hoop. We got some really good looks and went on a nice run." North Eugene suffered 37 turnovers. "Our press worked fairly well in the first half but we couldn’t score," said Karrick, noting that the Tornado made only 3 of 15 free throws in the opening two quarters. Advertisement Megan Ross added seven points and Heidi Siebenlist grabbed six rebounds for North Medford, which moved to 2-0 with the win. ASHLAND 63, LAKERIDGE 56, OT — At Corvallis, freshman 6-foot-3 post Brenna Heater came off the bench to score 25 points and grab 14 rebounds as Ashland rallied for a season- opening win over Lakeridge at the Crescent Valley Tournament. The Grizzlies (1-0) trailed by 12 points early in the fourth quarter before outscoring the Pacers 12-2 in the final period and 10-3 in overtime. Senior guard Jamie Roupp had 19 points and nine assists for Ashland. Amanda Huck scored 25 points to lead Lakeridge but the Grizzlies held the post/wing scoreless over the final 12 minutes after switching to a zone defense. The Eagles forced Summit into many bad decisions with solid perimeter defense to take a 15-5, first-quarter lead. Eagle Point locked down on defense the rest of the way and outrebounded Summit 40-19. Terrah Whipple added nine points, three rebounds and three steals for the Eagles (1-1). Grants Pass held an early 12-6 lead, but West Albany began to overpower the Cavers, who were playing their first game of the season. Haley Blum had 21 points to lead West Albany and Elizabeth Jablonski chipped in 11. Ashley Franko scored 10 points and Amanda Potts added 10 rebounds for Grants Pass. The Cavers, who play at South Eugene today, also got six rebounds from Gabby Randall and five assists from Courtney Cameron. Crater plays Redmond in the consolation game today. The Comets made only 3 of 29 field goal attempts in the first half and finished 10 of 60 overall. Kenna Reiter had nine points and four steals, while Emily Brookins had six rebounds and four assists to lead Crater.
