Roseburg Pepsi knots things up ROSEBURG - Michael Myhre gave up a home run and a double to Ashland Pilots slugger Bill Rowe but the Roseburg Pepsi pitcher was in command most of the way as Roseburg beat the Pilots 7-3 Friday night to even their best-of-three series for the American Legion Area 4 title. The decisive third game will be played at 5 p.m. today at Ashland's North Mountain Park. Myhre, a right-hander and senior-to-be at Roseburg High, scattered nine hits over the nine-inning game and registered five strikeouts and no walks. "His control was great," Roseburg Pepsi coach Ron Goodell said. "They got some hits but they couldn't string together a big inning." Rowe's homer, his eighth of the summer, was a solo shot to lead off the third inning and tied the game 2-2. But Roseburg scored a run in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good, then scored two more in the fifth on RBI singles by Marcus Simone and Jimmy Neyhart for a 5-2 lead. Cory Baird went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to lead Roseburg's attack. Ryan Major and Grant Goodell each added a pair of hits. Rowe, Mike Allen and Charles Dotterrer each went 2-for-4 for the Pilots. Ashland routed Roseburg Pepsi 14-2 in the opening game of the series Thursday, but now the series is tied. "I told our kids it didn't matter whether we lost 14-2 or 1-0, it was still one game and one game only," Goodell said. "We bounced back real well tonight." The winner of today's game advances to the Amercian Legion A state tournament Agu. 8-13 in Portland. Softball BLUE ACES WIN TWO - At McAllen, Texas, the South Medford Blue Aces U16 fastpitch softball team defeated the Arizona Amigas and the San Joaquin Frozen Ropes at the national tournament on Friday. Jennifer Mendenhall pitched a three-hit shutout and Erin Mendenhall went 3-for-4 with three RBIs as the Blue Aces beat the Amigas 7-0. The Blue Aces received another shutout performance against the Frozen Ropes as Darci Byrne allowed just two hits and fanned six in a 3-0 win. The Blue Aces resume play today in the double-elimination tournament. BLACK TORNADO OUSTED - At Broken Arrow, Okla., the North Medford Black Tornado was eliminated Thursday from the U14 national A softball tournament with a 9-1 loss to the Indiana Express. The Tornado finished the tournament 0-4. North got its run in the fourth inning when Ashley Likens led off with a single and Lisa Dudley ripped an RBI double to the fence. Stephanie Haskett had two of the Tornado's five hits, and Deni Rowley had the other. North committed eight errors. Soccer The RVSC Lazers U-12 girls soccer team ran their summer record to 9-0 and captured their second consecutive tournament with a 2-0 win over the CPSC Wolves in the final of the Corvallis Invitational Tournament last Sunday. The Lazers were led by a strong defense and Alanna Stevens tournament leading eight goals. The margin in the Sunday afternoon final came on a free kick in the 18th minute by Rachel Pavlich and Whitney Hodnett's conversion of a Pavlich corner kick in the 38th minute. The Lazers earned the trip to the final with a dominating performance including a 7-0 win over Hillsboro in the morning semifinal.
