Phoenix runs away from Lakeview PHOENIX � Lakeview jumped out to an early lead, but Phoenix used pressure defense and efficient shooting to post a 61-46 Skyline Conference boys basketball victory Saturday. Lakeview led by as many as nine points in the opening quarter, but the Pirates (8-6, 2-2 Skyline) chipped away to take a 28-27 halftime advantage. "The key was our press created a good tempo for us," Phoenix coach Tom Murphy said. "The kids converted the turnovers into a few easy buckets." Phoenix senior forward Kevin Jeffers scored nine of his game-high 18 points in the third quarter when the Pirates outscored the Honkers 24-9. Jeffers had 10 rebounds to help Phoenix win the battle of the boards, 33-26. "He (Jeffers) was being aggressive offensively," said Murphy. "We were able to find him against their man-to-man, and he gave us some good movement in our offense." Landon Rhodes had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Pirates. "(Derek) Strubel and (Jacob) Denbrook have a tendency to control the glass for Lakeview," said Murphy. "We more than held our own on the boards. Michael Fiddler added 15 points and five rebounds as St. Mary�s improved to 10-3 overall. Vernon Miller led Chiloquin with 12 points. St. Mary�s had 17 steals, getting three apiece from Jason Caplan and Thatcher Jones. The Crusaders led 32-21 at halftime and limited Chiloquin to 13 points in the second half. A suspension, illness and injury added up to trouble for the Challengers (7-7, 0-1 SCL) as they dropped their Southern Cascade League opener. Sophomore point guard Mychal Sha was out for one game after breaking a team rule in practice. Reserve post Kyle Bullard was sick, and Jordan Ferrell injured both ankles in the space of a few minutes. Without Sha, Cascade had difficulty handling the ball and committed 37 turnovers. The Challengers trailed by as many as 14 points, but narrowed the deficit to 51-49, early in the fourth quarter. Stan Kelley led the Challengers with 18 points, while Chad Harvey had 15. Brian Edwards added 11 rebounds. Richardson, 6-foot-3, drilled 7 of 8 3-pointers. Shannon Sizemore paced Butte Falls (3-9, 3-2 Skyline A South) with 15 points, while Jed Rowden added 14.
