CHRISTMAS CLASSIC Cascade boys roll with balanced scoring Four Cascade Christian players scored in double figures as the Challengers cruised to an 80-42 win over Umpqua Valley Christian in Tuesday's opening round of the boys portion of the Crusader-Challenger Christmas Classic played at South Medford High. Center Tim Alvarez led the Challengers with 15 points and Tim Milojevich had 14. Jared Ferrell scored 11 points for the Challengers and Joe Moxley added 10. The Challengers (4-2) jumped to a 21-8 lead after one quarter and extended their lead to 44-18 at halftime. "Our forwards did a good job of crashing the boards," said Cascade Christian coach Brian Morse. "They got a lot of offensive boards and scored off them. "The guards (Andy Kimmelshue and Don Jenkins) did a good job of getting the ball into our big guys," said Morse. Cascade Christian will meet St. Mary's in today's third round at 1 p.m. at South Medford High. St. Mary's Geoff Haas had a big day as St. Mary's defeated Etna, Calif. 55-48 and South Medford sophomores 62-39. Haas had 17 points in the Crusaders win over Etna, then he poured in 18 against South Medford. Girls Cascade Christian won two games during the opening day of the girls side of the Crusaders-Challengers Christmas Classic played at St. Mary's gym. The undefeated Challengers (7-0) swept past Umpqua Valley Christian 50-39 and the North Medford sophomore team, 59-21. "We have more discipline than last year," Cascade Christian coach Loren King said. "We're looking for each other more than just unloading the ball. Our defense has been a real key for us. We've held most of our opponents below 40 points." Cascade got its fast break rolling against Umpqua Valley Christian to take a 20-14 halftime lead. Crystal Tait scored nine of her game-high 15 points in the third quarter as the Challengers pulled away to a 38-25 advantage going into the final period. Sophomore transfer from Thurston High Kelly Clarke scored 14 points to lead four Challenger players in double figures against the North Medford sophomores. Sophomore point guard Shawna Jackson had a double-double to lead St. Mary's to a victory over Butte Falls 42-21 after dropping its opener to Etna 63-30.
