Edwards dominates State of Jefferson ASHLAND -- The distance Paris Edwards has put between herself and the competition this fall is staggering. The Ashland High Junior once again ran in a different time zone than the rest of the field Saturday at Lithia Park as she led the Grizzlies to victory in the State of Jefferson Invitational. Edwards knocked off 34 seconds from her course record on the 5,000-meter route, hitting the finish chute in 18 minutes, three seconds. She outdistanced runner-up Emily Steinhart of Hidden Valley by more than a minute. "No one has come within 70 seconds of Paris this year," said Ashland coach Bob Julian. "At this point, cautiously, I'd say she is the favorite (going into the Nov. 6 Class 4A state meet). The only top runners she hasn't gone against are from Jesuit, and they're running nearly a minute slower than she is." Edwards finished second in the state meet as a freshman and third last year. She was also disappointed with her second-place finish in last spring's 1,500 track finals. Her response to those finishes has had a great deal to do with her quantum leap this fall. "She went down to the Golden West meet (in Sacramento, Calif.) and finished seventh or eighth and came back and said, `I'm going to be as good as those people,"' Julian said. Edwards went to an elite training camp with the nation's top prep runners in San Diego during the summer. "She came back with the attitude that she knew how good she had to be," Julian said. "She has stepped it up a notch. Basically, her setbacks from last year have propelled her to see how good she can be." Ashland's Anita Sindelar and Jessica Stowell finished eighth and ninth as the Grizzlies edged Rogue River, 62-69, for the Division I girls title. South Eugene was third and Crater fourth. Steinhart was clocked in 19:12.9, while Skyline Conference rival Selena Harman was third in 19:36.4. In the boys race, Erik Heinonen paced South Eugene to victory, cruising to a course record 15:51.5 finish. South Medford's Perry Custance was second in 16:18.1, while St. Mary's Trevor Coolidge was third in 16:37.5. Coolidge led the race after one mile before Heinonen took command. The Axemen outlegged second-place Ashland, 73-98, for the team title.
