Still, third-ranked Sheldon got the best of the Black Tornado, 25-22, 21-25, 25-21, 25-12, at North Medford High. “It was a good fight tonight,” said North Medford coach Erika Wright. “It was kind of bittersweet. We were able to get a set against their starters but couldn’t get the win, and of course, you always want to go out and win. It was a good confidence builder for our kids.” Senior outside hitter Emily Carter had 11 kills and eight digs against Sheldon’s front line, which is among the tallest in the state and features star outside hitter Avery Housley. North Medford senior defensive specialist Ryan Frings came off the bench to pick up five aces and 10 digs, while middle hitters Adriane McLemore and Karen Polataivao played well at the net. McLemore had six kills and four blocks with Polataivao adding four kills. “They’re playing a lot better and that’s changing things for us as a team because they’re really stepping up their game,” said Wright of her middle hitters. Sheldon jumped to 13-1 overall and 9-0 in the SWC. North Medford is 9-9 and 5-4. ROSEBURG 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 0: South Medford struggled to stay with 10th-ranked Roseburg, which claimed a 25-5, 25-9, 25-14 Southwest Conference victory at South Medford High. Sophomore middle hitter Chanel Groom had seven kills and one block and senior setter Kelsey Bartlett five digs and six assists for the Panthers (0-12, 0-10 SWC). Sophomore outside hitters Brea Barton and Alyssa Vaughn combined for 15 digs. SOUTH EUGENE 3, GRANTS PASS 0: At Eugene, South Eugene won the Southwest Conference contest, 25-5, 25-9, 25-14. CRATER 3, SPRINGFIELD 0: At Central Point, despite the absence of two starters, Crater swept Midwestern League foe Springfield, 25-18, 25-17, 25-14. In addition to seven digs, Comets junior setter Cassidy Layton dished out 29 assists to aid junior outside hitter Nicole Morse, who registered 15 kills and nine digs. Junior libero Amanda Gardner came up with 14 digs for the Comets (10-6, 5-4 MWL), who were without Makayla York with a broken ankle and Destiny Fahndrich for personal reasons. ASHLAND 3, NORTH EUGENE 1: At Ashland, Ashland won for the eighth time in its last nine matches, taking the Midwestern League match, 25-12, 23-25, 25-15, 25-17. The Grizzlies (14-5, 7-2 MWL) swept the season series with the Highlanders (7-10, 3-6). MAZAMA 3, PHOENIX 0: At Klamath Falls, Phoenix had trouble matching up with Mazama, resulting in the Vikings’ 25-18, 25-10, 25-23 triumph. The Pirates (3-12, 0-7 Skyline Conference) received 17 assists from Emi Weiss and 12 digs from Lizette Gutierrez. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0: At Cave Junction, junior outside hitter Claire Hawkins posted 11 kills and Alyssa Brown contributed 24 assists for Cascade Christian en route to a 25-12, 25-8, 25-4 victory. Senior middle hitter Ellie Brown added eight kills for the Challengers (14-1, 5-0 Southern Cascade League), who received 19 digs from freshman libero Aubrey Kievit. ST. MARY’S 3, ROGUE RIVER 0: At Rogue River, St. Mary’s had a season-high 19 aces in the 25-18, 25-14, 25-9 Southern Cascade League win. The Crusaders (10-0, 4-1 SCL) got six aces from junior Madi Christensen and five from junior Ashley Rietmann. Christensen also had 11 kills and two blocks, while junior Mackenzie Addington led the team in passing. Della Birdsall posted seven kills, seven digs and a pair of blocks for the Chieftains (0-14, 0-6 SCL). Courtney Sakraida contributed nine digs, nine assists, three aces and two blocks. Bella Dodson added 13 digs.
