M.F. and Ed Hanley of Medford sold their crop of alfalfa seed last week to Ralph Waldo Elden of Central Point for a sum that returned them better than $40 per acre. The crop was grown on the Hanley farms, near Jacksonville, on an area that aggregated approximately forty acres, and the yield was just about five bushels per acre. As a matter of fact, the yield was considerably better than five bushels per acre, but lack of proper harvesting machinery prevented its being fully gathered. The first cutting was harvested as hay and the growth following was allowed to mature seed. The seed is unusually fine. Samples were submitted to the state seed laboratories and the report showed that the recleaned seed has a purity of 99.75 per cent. This is a very high percentage of purity — much higher than the standard required by law. No dodder seed was found. The hulling was done by Al Leonard of Jacksonville and was a very clean job. It is understood that Mr. Alden has options on about as much more locally grown seed and that he will install a thoroughly efficient seed cleaner for handling alfalfa and red clover seed. The Rogue River valley, in Mr. Elden's opinion, has the best climate for the production of high-grade alfalfa seed in any part of the Pacific coast and should be producing several carloads of seed every year as an important source of revenue. Mr. Elden will deal in alfalfa seed on a wholesale basis and his efforts should be of real benefit to the valley. MYSTERY WRAPS DEATH OF FORMER DRY CREEK WOMAN A letter just received by Geo. W. Reagan, 318 South Newtown Street, this city, from a Mr. Jester, of Jester, Oklahoma, to which place Mr. and Mrs. J.M. McDaniels, formerly of this valley, moved some months ago, conveys the impression that the sudden death of Mrs. McDaniels in her home some days ago was a tragedy in which the husband may be charged with murder. No definite details are given. It appears that, at the time the letter was written, nothing definite had been done toward unraveling the mystery. J.M. McDaniel will be remembered as having owned an orchard on Dry Creek, in the Antelope district. He traded it for property at Jester, Oklahoma, where the alleged tragedy is said to have occurred.
