Mail Tribune / Jim Craven Truck wreck shuts part of I-5 One semi-truck smashed into another on Interstate 5 near Gold Hill Wednesday morning, critically injuring one driver and closing a portion of the freeway for much of the day while crews cleaned up one truck’s cargo that the crash scattered across the road. The crash happened about 8 a.m. in mile 40 of I-5, Oregon State Police reported. Ronald Dean Richardson, 37, of Medford, was driving a tractor-trailer combination for Andrus Trucking of St. George, Utah, when he hit the back of a May Trucking semi driven by Harold Rudick, 48, of Washington, police said. Mercy Flights transported Richardson to Rogue Valley Medical Center by helicopter. He remained in critical condition Wednesday night, hospital officials said. Rudick was taken to the hospital by ambulance and was treated and released, police said. Both trucks were southbound in the interstate’s slow lane under the Gold Hill overpass when the crash happened, police said. Troopers continue to investigate the crash’s cause. The wreck scattered cargo, including building materials, across the roadway and mangled the cab of the truck Richardson was driving. The interstate’s southbound lanes were closed until after 5 p.m. while Oregon Department of Transportation crews cleaned up the scene. During the investigation and clean up, highway traffic was rerouted around the accident via exit 40. Southbound traffic was backed up several miles throughout the day.
