EAGLE POINT -- All spring, the Ashland boys golf team has finished first or second in every tournament. Now with a trip to the Class 4A state tournament on the line, the Grizzlies find themselves needing perhaps their best round. Despite an outstanding round from co-leader Per Englund, the Grizzlies found themselves on the outside looking in after the first day of the Southern Oregon Conference tournament at Eagle Point Golf Course Monday. The SOC's two state tournament representatives are decided by the team with the best overall performance in six league rounds and by play in the two-day district tourney. In season-long play, Ashland trailed Roseburg by 15 strokes going into Monday and had a 35-stroke lead over Grants Pass. But on Monday, the Cavemen went out and shot a four-man total of 307 on the par-72 layout. Roseburg maintained its overall lead with a 311, while the Grizzlies came in at 317. "That was our worst tournament of the year," Ashland coach Rich Mikula said. "Unfortunately, with district counting so heavily, we picked a poor day to turn in such a poor performance." As a result, Ashland needs to outscore Grants Pass by 11 strokes today to punch its ticket to the state tournament, May 15-16 at Langdon Farms in Aurora. "It's certainly well within our grasp to beat Grants Pass by 11 strokes," Mikula said. "But each kid needs to be focused. Englund matched Grants Pass' Geoff Davis with a 1-over par 73. Englund turned in a 1-under-par 35 on the front side. Roseburg's Jason Gaston shot a blistering 3-under-par 33 on the first nine before settling for a 75. "I don't wish bad luck on anyone, but we may have to rely on someone else falling apart (today)," said Mikula. "But I'd like to think we could do it by our men shooting low scores. I'm expecting low scores, they can't go too much further up." North Medford was at 336 for a team total. The Black Tornado was led by Matt Dunbar's 79. Teammate Adam Huycke shot 36 on the front side but ran into trouble on the back and came in at 82. South Medford and Eagle Point were two shots behind North Medford. South's Steve Hilgendorf and Noah Horstman shot 79 and 81, respectively. Chris Lilya shot 78 and Ryan Frazier 82 for the Eagles. SOC Girls Golf KINNEY LEADS AT SOC TOURNEY -- At Grants Pass, Tai Kinney carded a 73 take a three-shot lead after the first day of the Southern Oregon Conference girls golf championships Monday at Grants Pass Golf Club. Grants Pass' Johnna Nealy is second with a 76, and South Medford's Abby Fowler is third with an 81. The Cavers lead the team race with a 359 score, while South Medford is second at 365. Roseburg (393) is third and the Black Tornado (413) stands in fourth-place. Final round competition is today at noon at the Grants Pass Golf Club. Dereck Horning shot a 78 to pace the Mustangs to a 349. Ryan Defenbach, helped keep Illinois Valley just one stroke off the lead. He shot the individual low of 74, and the Cougars stand at 350. Henley stands alone in third-place at 353. The final round is today at 11 a.m. at Shield Crest Golf Course in Klamath Falls. Luce and Mania, both sophomores, paced the Crusaders to a 367 team total. Henley is second at 384. The Hornets' Brandi McElfresh leads the medalist race by one stroke at 88.
