Fourth-quarter surge helps Henley top North Valley KLAMATH FALLS - The Henley girls basketball team accelerated and North Valley stalled in the fourth quarter Friday. Henley's final-period surge carried the Hornets past North Valley 61-50 in Skyline Conference girls basketball. Henley handed North Valley its first conference loss and pulled even with the Knights for second in the league standings at 4-1. Henley led 48-44 entering the final stanza before Nicole Pence connected on three jumpers on three straight possessions to bump the lead to 10. "They just caught fire and hit everything they threw up," North Valley coach Byron Robertson said. "We couldn't hit a bucket and we turned the ball over a couple of times after they got the lead." North Valley (10-3) survived an initial Hornet burst in the first quarter to trail by two at the end of the period. The Knights capitalized on 15 free-throw attempts in the second quarter to cut their deficit to one by halftime. "They came out and played well and we matched them," said Robertson. "We attacked them. They made some adjustments in the second half and we stopped attacking." Elaina Renius, a 6-foot-3 sophomore post, led a balanced North Valley attack with 10 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out with about one minute left in the game. North Valley reserves Whitney Makepeace, K'Pree Ford-Harris and Michelle Beck combined for 15 points. "We had some pretty good contributions from our bench," said Robertson. "We need to shoot the ball more consistently from the outside to offset what Elaina (Renius) can do inside."
