LOCAL ROUNDUP Studs hold off Rogues in season opener Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 30, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted May. 30, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News The Medford Rogues put themselves in a bind by allowing four unearned runs in the second inning and the Seattle Cheney Studs made that hold up for a 6-5 victory in the season opener for both wood-bat baseball teams at Harry & David Field on Friday. The teams will square off again at 6:35 tonight in the second game of the three-game nonleague series. There will be a post-game fireworks display. Two errors and a hit batter opened the door for the visiting Studs in the top of the second and, with two outs, Marcus Hinkle supplied an RBI single and Connor Savage smacked a three-run double against Rogues starter Jackson Bertsch. Medford (0-1) rallied back with three runs in the fourth inning after Nathan Etheridge reached on an error and scored on Dan Mayer’s triple for the first run by the Rogues. Austin O’Banion and Jackson Overlund followed with RBI singles. Seattle Cheney (1-0) tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning for a 6-3 cushion on Dylan LaVelle’s two -run single against reliever Billy Olson. The Rogues scratched back with a pair of runs in the seventh when Brice Tilton scored on a groundout by Derron Davis and Tony Roque plated Justin Mulraney with a two-out single. Medford couldn’t keep the rally going, however, as Etheridge struck out to end the frame. Medford got the tying run on second base with two outs in the eighth inning in O’Banion but the Studs got out of the jam when first baseman Nate Backes snared Tilton’s line drive. Taylor Thompson struck out two Rogues in a perfect ninth to earn the save.
