Instead of visiting the traditional brick-and-mortar branches, an increasing number of customers have been using online and mobile banking services. There will be four consolidations in Southern Oregon. Among them are the Stewart Avenue branch in Medford, whose accounts will transfer to the Medford Main branch at 220 E. 10th St., and the Talent branch, whose accounts will transfer to the Phoenix branch at 4000 S. Pacific Highway. The closures include 18 store locations and eight retirement centers. "The industry itself is changing from a technology perspective," said Neal Brown, an Umpqua vice president and regional director based in Roseburg. "The customers have access to their bank via their phones or computers, so there are less and less transactions occurring in the branches and more occurring through digital channels." Affected customers' accounts will be moved to the nearest open branches in June or July. The bank hasn't released information regarding how many locations will remain or how many employees will be affected. It had 118 branches in Oregon as of late 2015 and more than 350 in the five states in which it operates. The bank has had a successful year, earning $253.8 million in 2015, $1.15 per diluted share, compared to $202.5 million, $1.08 per share, in 2014. "The bank's doing great, these are just business decisions to make sure that we're meeting the needs of our customers and the way they're doing business and the way their habits are changing," Brown said.
