The Indians returned four interceptions for touchdowns and a kickoff for another in dismantling Eagle Point, 50-22, Friday in the Southern Oregon Conference football opener for both teams. Roseburg (3-1, 1-0 SOC), smarting from a 35-7 whipping at the hands of top-ranked Canby a week earlier, scored 34 third-quarter points to turn the game into a runaway. Of the Indians’ five touchdowns in the period, only one was the result of an offensive play — a 20-yard run by Austin Shoptaw. Advertisement "It sounds to me like our best offense was our defense," said Roseburg coach Thurman Bell, whose team intercepted six passes and recovered a fumble. "I think we ran one offensive play in the third quarter," he said, "and it went for a TD. Our defense was out there the whole time. We couldn’t get our offense on the field." With all of the scoring, 21 penalties by the two teams and liberal substituting in the second half, Bell added, "I thought we were going to set a record for the length of a ballgame." Kerry Hall and Shoptaw each ran back two picks for TDs. Hall’s covered 50 and 31 yards, and Shoptaw’s went 44 and 53 yards. Aaron Buxton chipped in an 80-yard kickoff return. "Our kids did a pretty good job," said Bell. "They just happened to be in the right place at the right time and picked off a few balls. Most of the passes the kids got were in the flats, and they were pretty much uncontested running for the touchdowns." The Eagles’ Jered McClellan threw four interceptions, completing 8 of 20 passes for 126 yards. Creighton Nevin and Jeremy Carvajal threw the others. Shoptaw ran nine times for 99 yards for the Indians. Nevin carried 17 times for 104 for the Eagles (2-1, 0-1 SOC).
