Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 15, 2005 Man shot in police dispute will serve probation By SARAH LEMON Mail Tribune A man shot while trying to reach his gun during a struggle with a Medford police officer will spend no more time in jail. Jeffrey Wayne Webb, 21, of the 1200 block of Stewart Avenue, pleaded guilty Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court to charges of attempted first-degree assault, resisting arrest and second-degree child neglect. Webb was sentenced to three years on probation and three months in jail. But because he had already been incarcerated for more than four months, he was scheduled for release. Officer Scott Clauson shot Webb in the left arm on May 27 at a Spring Street apartment when Webb tried to push past him and grab a gun on the floor. Webb also tried to spray Clauson with the officer’s own mace, prosecutors said. "This was a real dumb move," Circuit Court Judge Ray White told Webb in Friday’s hearing. "You’re lucky you didn’t get yourself shot. Well, you did get yourself shot; you’re lucky you didn’t get yourself killed." Advertisement Clauson came to the apartment to assist state child welfare workers investing a complaint of child neglect. Believing that a 2-year-old boy wandering naked outside the apartment was in danger, Clauson attempted to arrest Webb, who was baby-sitting the boy and 1-year-old girl found crying in her crib. After Clauson removed a .22-caliber, semi-automatic pistol from Webb’s pants pocket, Webb became agitated and would not allow himself to be handcuffed. During the struggle, the handgun was knocked from Clauson’s gun belt onto the floor. Clauson was justified in shooting Webb, a Jackson County grand jury ruled in June. The bullet that hit Webb’s arm lodged in his abdomen. Webb underwent surgery at Rogue Valley Medical Center and spent 12 days in the hospital before he was taken to jail. With his plea, Webb agreed that he tried to injure Clauson, who has been with the Medford Police Department for 10 years. Clauson was shot in the leg during a 1999 police shoot-out in west Medford.
