Mail Tribune 100, June 24, 1922 By Alissa Corman Jun 24, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago June 24, 1922 BRANCH ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION MAY BE ESTABLISHED IN CITY Dr. Platt W. Covington of the Rockefeller Foundation was in Medford yesterday to present the advantages that Jackson County would have in being one of the five counties in Oregon wherein demonstrations are to be made to show the value of a full time county physician, two public health nurses and a clerical laboratory assistant. It is to prevent sickness and decrease the death rate. Such a program would cost $10,000. The Rockefeller Foundation and the State Board of Health would contribute the sum of $5,580, leaving $4,420 to be paid by the county. The present expense of the county nurse, amounting to $2,500 may be applied to the $4,420, so that it will only require an additional appropriation of $1,920 to get the $10,000 health program in Jackson County. Dr. Covington presented briefly the advantages of the full time health officer plan before a few members of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon, and will return to the city later and take up the subject again before a general meeting of the chamber. COMMUNICATIONS Wanted — Fruit for Portland To the Editor: Please insert in the columns of your paper the following article: The Pacific Coast Rescue and Protective society kindly asks its friends to remember the girls, mothers and babies when canning. The society, on an average, provides for fifty girls, seventy-five babies and a staff of thirty-five workers and attendants daily in the Louise Home and Albertina Kerr Nursery Home. These unfortunate girls and babies come from almost every county in the state. Any one wishing to donate canned fruit and vegetables please communicate with the general office, 195 Burnside street, Portland, so that jars may be shipped prepaid.
