News guys are often loath, which is a polite way of saying chicken, to say anything is the oldest or newest or most or whatever, because such claims have a way of getting them into trouble. But the fearless geologists in the Earth Sciences Division here at Since You Asked assure it’s safe to bet you can’t find older rocks as part of a natural landform in Oregon than those in a deposit near Prineville in an area known as the Berger Ranch. Here is a 200-foot thick limestone deposit from the Devonian age, a very ancient time when the continents of North America and Europe were joined together and were found at about the equator. In this terrain, a group of rocks displaced from their point of origin are ancient rocks with microfossils that are about 380 million years old.
