I know it has something to do with tax. I was wondering what tax it is for and when did it first come? What’s the history on this? — Tom C., Eagle Point Actually, Tom, the 9/10 sign that you see at gas stations is put up by the gas companies, not by the government. Oregon tacks on 24 cents for every gallon, while the federal government adds 18 cents. This money is used to repair, maintain and administer public roads. As for that persistent 9/10 sign, the gas companies buy and sell their gas by fractions of gallons. This allows gas stations to charge by fractions of cents. The gas companies display those signs simply because they can. In reality, it’s just a marketing ploy to make gas seem a bit cheaper than it is.
