Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend June 22, 2005 Eubank, Walker on all-state first teams By FRANK SILOW Mail Tribune Abe Eubank’s offensive production this season did not get overlooked as the North Medford junior first baseman was selected to the Class 4A baseball all-state first team. Phoenix senior third baseman Chad Walker was chosen as a first-teamer on the Class 3A team. Senior pitcher Bryn Card of two-time 3A state champion Henley was player of the year. The teams were selected by a vote of the state’s coaches. Other Southern Oregon Conference players on the Class 4A first team were Grants Pass senior outfielder Patrick Allen and Roseburg junior pitcher Blake Keitzman — the SOC player of the year. Advertisement Eubank led the Black Tornado with a .468 batting average and .870 slugging percentage. He had a team-high 31 RBIs, six home runs and scored 28 runs. "(Eubank) is a tough out," Grants Pass coach Stacy Morgan said. "He can do the little things also." Allen was a stalwart for the Cavemen. The center fielder played every inning for four years. He batted a team-high .486 in the leadoff role. He scored 28 runs, had 16 RBIs and was successful on six of seven stolen base attempts. In 83 at-bats, Allen only struck out two times. "Down the stretch, (Allen) was tough as nails," said Morgan. "He was able to set the table for our other kids." South Medford senior outfielder Dan Chancler and North Medford senior pitcher Josh Suarez were second-team picks. Chancler, a three-time SOC all-star, used his speed to make an impact at the plate and in the field. Chancler was moved from left to center field this season. He covered a lot of ground in the outfield and demonstrated an ability to run down difficult fly balls. Offensively, Chancler was a force as a leadoff hitter with a .381 average. He scored 29 runs, had 20 RBIs and hit four home runs. Suarez, the ace of the Black Tornado staff, posted a 9-0 record with 94 strikeouts in 672/3 innings pitched. He also hit .354 with 22 runs and 18 RBIs. Grants Pass, which advanced to the state semifinals, was rewarded with a third-team pick for senior shortstop Mike Mills, and senior catcher Adam Donnelly was an honorable mention selection. Mills, the Cavemen’s No. 3 hitter, batted .406, knocked in 22 runs and scored 20. He had a .736 slugging percentage and a team-high six home runs. West Linn senior pitcher Michael Eisenhauer and Westview senior infielder Jason Ogata shared 4A player-of-the-year honors. Brian Champion of state champion Sprague was the coach of the year. In 3A, Walker had a big year for the Pirates offensively and didn’t have an error all season. Walker led Phoenix in hitting with a .522 average and drove in 38 runs. "(Walker) was our big RBI man," Phoenix coach Joe Hagler said. "He has a sweet swing. He hits the ball sharp consistently." Skyline Conference champion Rogue River was recognized with Gary Richardson on the second team and Spencer Frantz on the third team. Additionally, seniors Justin Castro and Joey Parrillo received honorable mention. Richardson paced the Rogue River pitching staff with an 8-2 regular-season record and a 1.38 ERA. He had 81 strikeouts in 71 innings. Offensively, Richardson had a team-best .480 batting average with 20 RBIs and three home runs. Frantz shined at shortstop and hit .410 with a team-high five home runs and 23 RBIs. Phoenix junior outfielder John Goldberg, who overcame injury problems, was picked on the third team. Dale Cutsforth of Central was the 3A coach of the year.
