Raider men rally for consolation triumph SALEM Southern Oregon University used a determined performance to register a 64-55 mens basketball victory over Willamette University in the consolation game of the John Lewis Classic Saturday at Cone Field House. The Raiders, who trailed most of the game, held Willamette scoreless over the final six minutes and erased a seven-point deficit to post their fifth win in nine outings. The Raiders have equaled their victory total from last year, when they were 5-23. "We just gave that little extra effort," Southern Oregon coach Brian McDermott said. "We refused to let it happen to us. We kept hanging in there." Raider junior forward Chad Paris, who is recovering from wrist and ankle injuries, scored a game-high 19 points, while junior transfer Matt Zosel added 14 rebounds and 11 points. The Raiders trailed 38-30 at halftime but turned up the defensive intensity after the break with aggressive man-to-man defense. "They didnt get many good looks the whole second half," said McDermott. Southern Oregon was impatient on the offensive end early, but altered that tendency in the second half. "Finally in the last 10-11 minutes we got the kind of shots that we needed," said McDermott. "We made a conscious effort to get to the rim a little more." The Raiders finished shooting a respectful 49 percent from the field. Reed Sorensen gave SOU a lift off the bench. The sophomore from Grants Pass contributed seven points and five rebounds in nine minutes of action. "Its a great preseason road win," said McDermott. "Were still not terribly certain of each other because we have a lot of new guys. But with a win like this, the guys begin to believe in the system more." Womens Basketball PACIFIC LUTHERAN 60, SOUTHERN OREGON 50 At Ashland, PLU became only the sixth visiting team to defeat SOU since 1996. The NCAA Division III Lutes (5-3) raced to a 17-7 lead over the first nine minutes and dominated the Raiders in virtually every statistical category, including a 43-35 rebounding edge. Twenty-six-percent shooting (13 of 50), including a 4-for-22 first half, doomed the Raiders (3-8) to their first home loss since Jan. 13 of last season. PLU, which never trailed, built its largest lead of the game at 25-11 on a Jessica Iserman jumper with six minutes left before the half, but a pair of layups by senior guard Tiwana Merritt and five foul shots by senior point guard Alison Richards helped cut the deficit to nine, 31-22, at the break. Southern moved within six, 39-33, on Richards 10-foot leaner with 12 minutes to go, but successive Raider turnovers stalled the 7-1 run. After SOU clawed its way back to seven, 54-47, with two minutes left, comeback hopes were dashed when Iserman missed a shot but drew a late whistle on sophomore center Emily Wiley, prompting a Raider technical foul. While PLU converted eight more field goals, Southerns 22-for-26 performance from the free-throw line kept the Lute margin within 10 points for much of the game. Lute junior guard Jamie Keatts scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the second half. Richards finished with a career-high 17 points, including a 9-for-11 clip from the foul line. Merritt added 15 points. PACIFIC LUTHERAN (5-3) Franza 0-1 6-6 6, Keatts 9-16 0-0 19, Ruud 3-13 0-0 7, Springer 4-10 0-0 8, Iserman 3-8 4-8 10, Johnson 0-1 0-0 0, Ki.
