Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 29, 2006 Raiders rebound with rout of Cascade Raider Roundup ASHLAND — The Southern Oregon University men’s basketball team maintained its tenuous lead atop the Cascade Conference standings by raining 3-pointers on Cascade College in a 91-70 triumph at McNeal Pavilion Saturday. The NAIA Division II third-ranked Raiders (21-4, 10-3 CC) canned 12 of their 18 attempts from beyond the arc (67 percent), including all seven tries in the second half, to ease past the last- place Thunderbirds (5-17, 1-11) for the sixth consecutive time. SOU rebounded from Friday’s turnover-prone overtime setback to 15th-ranked Warner Pacific by leading Cascade from wire-to-wire with only seven ballhandling miscues and by finishing with a 34-for-57 overall shooting clip (60 percent). Five Raiders reached double figures in scoring, including senior All-American forward Shea Washington, who tallied 24 points. Senior post Jeff Williams, who converted all three of his 3-point shots, scored 13. Point guard Steve Farley had 12 points and seven assists, and wings Matt Cowell and Matt Espinoza combined for six triples and scored 11 apiece. Cascade, which snapped a 38-game league losing streak dating back to January 2004 by shocking Oregon Tech 90-86 Friday night, struggled to find an offensive rhythm against the Raider man-to-man defense. Junior guard Joshua Garrett led all players with 25 points, but senior center Trevor Hutton, who scored 26 against the Owls, mustered only nine, along with two rebounds. The Thunderbirds closed to 14-13 seven minutes into the game, but a 6-0 Raider run stymied the momentum. Leading 42-31 at halftime, SOU went on to build a 26-point cushion (88-62). Sophomore forward Tayo Cotton amassed 12 points and a team-best seven rebounds for the visitors, who shot 44 percent (28 of 63) but were outrebounded by a 33-30 count. Williams had seven boards for SOU, and Washington extended his own school career record with three blocked shots. Leading Warner Pacific by a half-game in the standings, the Raiders return to action next Saturday in Klamath Falls with a 7:30 p.m. showdown against archrival Oregon Tech. Women’s Basketball SOUTHERN OREGON 66, CASCADE 56 — At Ashland, Southern Oregon snapped a six-game home-court losing streak and augmented its playoff chances with a Cascade Conference victory. The Raiders (11-13, 4-9 CC) never trailed the last-place Thunderbirds (2-21, 0-12) and moved a game ahead of Evergreen State for eighth place in the hunt for one of the 10-team league’s eight playoff spots. Juniors Kelsey Richards and Andi Peterson led Southern Oregon with 17 points each, while sophomore point guard Chelsey Zimmerman had 15 points, nine assists, four rebounds and two steals in 40 minutes of action. The Thunderbirds had 21- and 20-point nights from junior forwards Jubilee Cristel and Kristin Woller, respectively. Both teams shot around 40 percent, but SOU finished with a 42-32 rebounding edge, headed by Peterson’s season-high nine. The Raiders led 29-24 at halftime and built a 48-36 advantage midway through the second period before Cascade cut the margin to 55-52 with four minutes to go. Richards, however, answered with a three-point play, and Cascade drew no closer.
