ELF leaves trail of fire, vandalism In just over two years, arson fires and other monkey-wrenching by the Earth Liberation Front have caused $21.4 million in damage, including $7.25 million in Oregon. ELF's eco-terrorist attacks include: Dec. 27, 1998: An arson fire at U.S. Forest Industries' Medford headquarters, causing $500,000 in damage. Oct. 26, 1998: The release of 5,000 mink in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, costing fur-farmers $100,000. Oct. 12, 1998: An arson fire at Vail ski resort in Colorado, causing $12 million in damage. June 28, 1998: Arson fires at two U.S. Department of Agriculture research stations in Olympia, Wash., causing $2 million in damage. Nov. 29, 1997: An arson fire at the Bureau of Land Management wild horse corrals in Burns, causing $450,000 in damage. July 21, 1997: An arson fire at the Cavel West meat-packing plant in Redmond, causing $1 million in damage. Oct. 30, 1996: An arson fire at the U.S. Forest Service ranger station in Oakridge, causing $5.3 million in damage.
