Edwards, Dobson win Prep cross country YREKA, Calif . -- Ashland junior Paris Edwards won the girls' 4,000-meter race and helped the Grizzlies to a second-place team finish at the Timberline Bank Cross Country Invitational Saturday. Edwards won the event in 14 minutes, 24 seconds, missing former Ashland runner Sarah Brandy's course record set in 1993 by two seconds. Foothill of Sacramento, Calif., was the top girls' team with 48 points. The Grizzlies scored 64 points and Rogue River came in third with 75. Klamath Union's Ian Dobson broke a 17-year-old course record by four seconds in the boys' 5,000 meters. Dobson was timed at 15:37. South Medford's Perry Custance was second with a mark of 15:56. Klamath Union, second in the state Class 4A cross country meet last year, placed four runners in the top seven to easily win the team event with 43 points. BEN CREEK GOLD BEACH CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL -- At Gold Beach, Trevor Coolidge and Martina Patella of St. Mary's each won their respective 5K races, improving on their second-place finishes from a year ago. Coolidge pulled away from the pack in the last half-mile to defeat Kyle Robbins of Gold Beach by one second with a time of 18:00. Freshman Nathan May of Phoenix was third. Arcata, Calif., won both team events, while the Phoenix boys finished second and the St. Mary's girls took fourth.
