Driver who struck bulls must pay $23,268 By Vickie Aldous Posted Apr 23, 2018 at 4:06 PM Updated Apr 23, 2018 at 6:04 PM Corey James Elmore ▲ Corey James Elmore ▲ --> An Ashland man has been ordered to pay $23,268 in restitution after eluding police while high on methamphetamine, crashing through a fence and striking two Angus bull yearlings. The injured bulls had to be put down, according to a probable cause affidavit. Corey James Elmore, 28, pleaded guilty Monday to unauthorized use of a vehicle, fleeing or attempting to elude police, driving under the influence of intoxicants and first-degree animal abuse. He also entered guilty pleas the same day in separate shoplifting and identity theft cases. Elmore was sentenced to 18 months of intensive probation for property and drug offenders, but could be sent to prison for three years if he violates the terms of his probation. His driver's license will be suspended for one year. He cannot have pets or domestic animals for five years and can have no contact with the ranch where the bulls lived or the animals there. Because Elmore is homeless, Jackson County Circuit Judge Lorenzo Mejia ordered him to live at the Jackson County Transition Center between Talent and Phoenix. "You're being given an opportunity here," Mejia said. "It's not going to be easy, but this is your last chance not to go to prison on this stuff." Mejia told Elmore the probation sentence will give him the opportunity to get a job and pay back the victims. Elmore said he has a job offer to build greenhouses. The incident that ended in the death of the bulls began at about 4:40 a.m. Feb. 11 on Patrick Street in Medford when Elmore stole a Ford F350 pickup the owner had left idling outside in order to warm it up, an affidavit said. At 4:48 a.m., a Jackson County sheriff's deputy spotted the stolen vehicle and, with overhead lights and siren on, tried to make a traffic stop. Elmore sped away, driving recklessly and reaching speeds of nearly 100 mph, the affidavit said. Elmore crashed through a wooden fence at Corey and North Foothill roads, continued through a field, hit the bulls and then drove back onto the road. But he lost control, crashed through another fence and became stuck in a muddy field, the affidavit said.
