Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 29, 2006 Area athletes finalists for Oregon awards A handful of athletes with ties to the Rogue Valley are finalists in voting for the annual Oregon Sports Awards. The winners will be announced tonight at a banquet at the Tiger Woods Center at the Nike headquarters in Beaverton. On the prep side, South Medford High junior Kyle Singler is one of 10 finalists for the Johnny Carpenter Prep Athlete of the Year Award, and Crater senior Isaac Stoutenburgh is one of six runners up for the Nike-Steve Prefontaine Award. Collegiately, former South Medford soccer standout Colleen Salisbury is a member of the University of Portland women’s team that is a finalist for the George Pasero Team of the Year Award. Two men’s basketball players, former South Medford star Eric Fiegi, now of Corban College, and Shea Washington of Southern Oregon University, are among five finalists for the Ad Rutschman Small-College Male Athlete of the Year Award. The awards were voted on by a statewide media panel. Advertisement Singler was named to the all-state second team in boys basketball last season and is a driving force on this season’s top-ranked team. He’s also been a key contributor on the Panthers’ football team. Stoutenburgh placed second in the cross country state championships and had two top-five placings in state track, taking fourth in the 1,500 meters and fifth in the 3,000. Salisbury and the Pilots won the NCAA women’s soccer championship 4-0 over UCLA. Salisbury played a major role for Portland in the semifinals, scoring the deciding goal in a 4-3 shootout victory over Penn State. Fiegi and Washington were both named to the NAIA Division II all-tournament team at nationals last season. Fiegi led the Cascade Conference in scoring at 27 points per game and was second in rebounding at 9.3 per game. Washington led the national tourney in scoring (26.3 points per game in three games) and was named the Cascade Conference’s MVP after being the first player ever to average a double-double (20.8 points, 10.0 rebounds per game).
