In the time since pianist/composer Piket returned to her native New York, the New England Conservatory graduate has played professionally with a wide range of jazz musicians. She played with David Liebman, Michael Formanek, Lionel Hampton, Mickey Roker, Harvey Wainapel, Eliot Zigmund, Benny Golson and the BMI/NY Jazz Orchestra and has twice been a featured guest on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz on National Public Radio. Recently, Piket played solo and in duo with McPartland in concert at the Eastman School of Music. Piket is especially acknowledged for her work as a composer and bandleader. She placed second in the first annual Thelonious Monk BMI Composers' Competition. Piket holds a bachelor's degree in computer science, which she earned concurrently with her music degree. After a year of working in the computer field, she passed up a future as a software engineer to pursue a career in creative music. Piket's trio has toured Japan, performing 12 nights at the Blue Note Club in Fukuoka, as well as performing in the United States. She has played her music at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and all over New York, including the Texaco-New York Jazz Festival, Smalls, the Blue Note Club, Birdland and the Knitting Factory. Major jazz magazines often include Piket's CDs in their "best of" lists. On her "September of Tears" CD released in Japan, Piket is joined by Rufus Reid and Billy Hart in a collection of originals and reworked standards. Her upcoming CD will feature her new trio with bassist Ratzo Harris and drummer Billy Mintz. An educator, Piket has held master classes at the Eastman School of Music, Rutgers University, Cal Arts, Duke University, the Northwestern University Composers' Colloquium, and many others in the U.S., Europe and Japan. She has coached ensembles at Long Island University, has several private students, served as a panelist for the Queens Council on the Arts grant review process and has taught at the Litchfield Jazz Camp and the Vermont Jazz Center. She is also the author of the "Jazz Piano Vocabulary" series of workbooks. Piket and her trio will hold a jazz improvisation workshop at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21. This workshop is open to all instruments and will demonstrate the ins and outs of performing in a jazz trio. Topics will cover jazz improvisation including concerns that teachers may have about how to teach students to improvise. Cost for the workshop is $10 for the general public and $5 for students and teachers. Several student scholarships are available.
