Woman dies when hit by ATV driven by Rogue River man

A 19-year-old woman died after running into the path of an ATV driven by a Rogue River man during a jumping event at Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area in Winchester Bay. Douglas County sheriff's deputies say Ellie Jean Powell of Olympia, Wash., was watching the jumping on Saturday when for no known reason she ran in front of the airborne ATV and was hit. She died at the scene of the accident on the back side of Banshee Hill. The driver of the ATV, 21-year-old Jonathan Shonk of Rogue River, was not hurt. He was on a 2007 Suzuki 400 Quad.
