The man, whose name was not available from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office or firefighters, was listed Friday in critical condition at Providence Medford Medical Center, said Chris Wolfard, operations chief for Applegate Fire District No. 9. Emergency crews from District 9 went to a swimming area near McKee Bridge at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, after receiving a report of a possible drowning. Wolfard said the victim apparently climbed up a hill toward a rope swing before losing his balance and falling 25 feet from a cliff. The man hit his head on some rocks and became submerged in the river. He was underwater for about one minute before eyewitnesses pulled him from the water and administered CPR, after realizing he was not breathing. Advertisement After several minutes of CPR, the man started breathing again, Wolfard said. "He was fortunate bystanders were paying attention," Wolfard said. "When I got on scene, he still wasn’t very responsive to painful stimulation." The man was flown by helicopter to Providence, Wolfard said. The man’s name was not included in a sheriff’s report.
