The incident was reported at about 2:50 p.m., shortly before the start of a dress rehearsal of "Oedipus Complex," which begins public previews today. Ashland fire officials said it appeared a nearby business was cleaning its drain with a substance that contained sulfuric acid, which created some gas that traveled into the air vents of the theater. About 40 cast and crew members were in the theater at the time, with about 100 other people waiting outside to see the rehearsal, said David Dreyfoos, OSF’s producing director. "I was told it smelled like rotten eggs and like sulfur," he said. "It was very pungent and very thick." Advertisement Kit Dickey, safety manager for OSF, said the theater was quickly evacuated. No injuries were reported, although a few people complained of sore throats and headaches, she said. Fire and police crews blocked off the front and back entrances to the OSF courtyard in front of the Bowmer and the Elizabethan Stage with yellow police tape. Fire crews brought in several large fans to air out the theater. Dreyfoos said "Humble Boy" was playing at the New Theatre across the street at the time but was not affected by the evacuation. Despite the trouble, the show must go on. Dreyfoos said the outdoor green show in the courtyard and the productions of "The Royal Family" in the Bowmer and "Henry the VI, Parts Two and Three" in the Elizabethan went on as scheduled.
