SOU improves to 4-0 TACOMA, Wash. - What looked like a mismatch on paper translated into one on the field as well. The Southern Oregon University football team rolled to a 42-7 lead at the half and cruised to a convincing 62-7 win over University of Puget Sound on Saturday at Baker Stadium. With the win, the Raiders improve to 4-0 for the first time since 1983. SOU's Dusty McGrorty returned from injury for full-time tailback duties and compiled 110 yards on the ground and found the end zone five times. The sophomore scored from 11 yards out at the 6:30 mark in the first quarter. In the second quarter, McGrorty turned a screen pass into a 16-yard score and went on to add touchdown runs of 2, 9 and 8 yards. But it was the Raider defense that set the tone once again. The Loggers were limited to 140 total yards of offense, including a dubious minus 23 effort on the ground. "Our defense played very well," said SOU coach Jeff Olson. "When you hold a team to minus rushing and one touchdown, that's pretty good." UPS quarterback Bret Burton was under duress the entire afternoon, completing just 14-of-33 with three interceptions. SOU special teams also caused two fumbles on kickoffs that helped set the tone for the game. "We dominated the line of scrimmage," said Olson. "It was our first road trip and the guys handled it pretty well. "But it's a mature group. They have done well on the road in the past." Quarterback Travis Mari kept UPS honest with a steady, 11-of-18 afternoon for 134 yards and two touchdowns. The Raiders return home next Saturday for a 3 p.m. game with Willamette.
