Meanwhile, four players who had tied for sixth place in the district tournament — one spot out of qualifying for state — now advance, said Roseburg Athletic Director Thurman Bell. Two are from Grants Pass, and two are from Roseburg. In preparing the Indians’ entry for state, which is Monday and Tuesday at Stone Creek Golf Course in Oregon City, athletic personnel discovered Friday that two players had dropped below Oregon School Activities Association requirements for classroom attendance. The players are Marc Palotai, who finished second individually at the SOC tournament, and Marc Goodell, who didn’t play at district because he was suspended for violating a team rule. Each had withdrawn from a class, dropping them below the minimum of five mandated by the OSAA, said Bell. Advertisement The players told Lonnie Lee, the team’s off-campus coach, they "had made adjustments in their classes," said Bell, but details of the changes and the impact on the players’ eligibility "didn’t make it from the counseling center to the athletic office," he added. When the problem came to light, said Bell, he notified the OSAA and Eagle Point High, which oversaw SOC boys golf. Next week he will begin to determine when the players became ineligible and which tournaments they played in afterward. The school will then forfeit the necessary events. The players who moved into a tie for fifth place with the removal of Palotai are Grants Pass’ Mike Leonard and Calen Nicholson and Roseburg’s Derek Rampersaud and McKenzie Gordon. Ashland, which won the district title, now becomes the regular-season champion in place of Roseburg and will be the only team to represent the SOC at state.
