H. A. Canaday and Ashland Minister Present Petition to County Clerk With 1,700 Names — Five Days Allowed for Checking Over Names. Petitions for the recall of Sheriff Charles E. Terrill were filed with the county clerk this morning, and, with them were also petitions nominating D. M. Lowe, farmer and fair exhibit collector, to make the race as the recall candidate. The petitions were filed by the Rev. W. Judson Oldfield, pastor of the Congregational Church of Ashland, Stella Leavitt, said to represent the W. C. T. U. of Ashland, and Minnie Bryant said to represent the W. C. T. U. of this city. The petitioning party were accompanied by Attorney H. A. Canaday and Frank Redden of this city, and two women. It was claimed by those having the recall petitions in their charge that 1,700 names had been signed. It is claimed that a large percent of the signers were women, and that the largest number of names were secured from Ashland precincts. From this 1,700 names the signatures of about 200 signers, who have filed written and telephonic requests that their names be withdrawn, will be stricken, and it is predicted that as many more will send in similar requests at once. To Check Names The county clerk will check over the list of names with the registration cards, and all not legal voters will have their names removed. Friends of the sheriff claim they know of a number of signature who are not within this provision of the law. The law provides for this checking and allows five days therefor. Under the law, the official whose recall is sought, is given five days to resign, which will not come to pass in this instance, as Sheriff Terrill has announced he will not. If the checking shows the required number of names — 1235 — it is then the duty of the county clerk to call a special election within 20 days, which would bring it the latter part of the last week of this month. No specific charges are filed against Sheriff Terrill, the recall being based upon the following allegations: “Non-performance of the duties of his office.” “For malfeasance in office as set fourth in the published report of the 1921 grand jury, of which Mr. J. W. Eldon was foreman.” Sheriff Terrill said this morning that, “I heard Rev. Oldfield said he had enough affidavits to send me to the penitentiary, but he would not file them.” For the last year, a new rumor has been sprung daily against the sheriff, always embracing some phase of the prohibition laws, and, it is said the affidavits in question reiterate nothing but gossip. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
