Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend March 16, 2006 Clash over pizza leads to charges By ANITA BURKE Mail Tribune A Rogue River man will face two counts of attempted aggravated murder and a burglary charge after a clash over baking a frozen pizza ended in gunfire. His girlfriend will face a charge of soliciting a murder for bringing him a gun and egging him on during the fight, prosecutors said. James Leonard Rechonie, 60, of the 1100 block of Fielder Creek Road, Rogue River, will be arraigned today in Jackson County Circuit Court on the burglary and attempted murder charges. Teri Lee Powers, 52, of Bullhead City, Ariz., will be arraigned on the soliciting a murder charge. The charges stem from a fight involving Rechonie, Powers and another man and woman in December, said David Orr, a Jackson County deputy district attorney. Rechonie allowed the other man to park a trailer on his Rogue River property. Because the trailer wasn’t connected to electrical, water or sewer systems, Rechonie invited the man to use his home when necessary, Orr said. Advertisement On Dec. 13 Rechonie and Powers went out to a bar. The trailer owner and his friend went into Rechonie’s home to bake a frozen pizza, then returned to the trailer, Orr said. When Rechonie and Powers came home, they were angered to smell pizza and find melted cheese on the counter, Orr said. They stormed to the trailer next door to confront the pair inside. After a shouting match, Rechonie told Powers to go get his gun. She did, then urged him on as he fired several shots into the trailer, yelling that he would kill the people inside, Orr said. Jackson County sheriff’s deputies initially jailed Rechonie on charges of first-degree criminal mischief, two counts of menacing, endangering a minor and resisting arrest. Orr filed the menacing charges and a charge of unlawful use of a weapon while Rechonie was in jail, but continued to search case law for an appropriate response. "It seemed serious that he fired bullets into the trailer," Orr said. "One had gone clear through the other side." Orr found case law that supports a burglary charge for anything — even a bullet — breaking into a home with criminal intent. When he moved to indict Rechonie on the burglary charge, and, for the first time, heard the victims’ story directly, he decided he had grounds for attempted aggravated murder charges. Powers was initially indicted on a first-degree criminal mischief charge in January. Orr also re-indicted her on the solicitation for murder charge.
