PREP ROUNDUP South pulls off tennis sweep In his four previous years as South Medford boys tennis coach, Joel Heller's Panthers had never defeated Ashland in a Southern Oregon Conference dual match. On Tuesday, the Panthers edged Ashland 5-4 at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park to claim a sweep from the Grizzlies in two duals this year. The Panthers used their dominance in singles as a blueprint for the victory. South won all five singles matches, while Ashland swept in doubles. "We've been strong all year in singles," said Heller. "We're very strong in our one, two and three positions. We've had success with various players in the four and five positions." Zach Matthews promoted his case as the No. 3 singles seed in the district tournament with a 6-1 and 6-1 victory over Dustin Brown in the top singles pairing. Then South got a boost from Eli Matthews in No. 2 singles with a victory over Aaron Harris, who has been the Grizzlies top singles seed much of the year. "That was a very well played match," said Heller. "It was a step up for Eli. He hustled a lot and played smart tennis." Another key win for the Panthers was by Richard Templeton, who prevailed in a three-set match over Greg Boesche, 7-5, 4-6 and 6-4. "I was impressed with Richard Templeton," said Heller. "He showed tenacity. It is his first year of competitive tennis and he's coming along real well." SINGLES -- Zach Matthews, SM, def. Dustin Brown, 6-1, 6-1; Eli Matthews, SM, def.
