GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL North stuns foe in late going BEAVERTON -- Defensive tenacity continues to carry the North Medford High girls basketball team. The Black Tornado stormed back from a nine-point deficit with less than three minutes to play to stun Chugiak, Alaska 47-42 in the Cascade Holiday Hoop Festival on Tuesday night. Senior guard Ashlee Giles registered a triple double for the Tornado, scoring a game-high 18 points to go with 11 rebounds and 10 steals. "We picked up the intensity those last few minutes and snuck away with the win," North Medford coach Mike Kay said. "We picked up the pressure and the other team finally broke." North Medford shot an ice-cold 26 percent from the field (15-for-58) but went on a 14-0 run late in the game to triumph for the seventh time in eight games this season. Jenny Close and Lu Crenshaw came up with back-to-back steals and layups to spark North Medford's run, and Jenny Ross added a rebound basket. North meets No. 3-ranked South Eugene today. The Axemen handed the Tornado its only defeat earlier this month. "Our kids are anxious to play them again," Kay said, meaning South Eugene. BELGIUM 47, CRATER 37 -- At Beaverton, freshman point guard Sarah Yager scored a game-high 17 points and led a Crater comeback in the fourth period, but the Comets couldn't surpass a talented Belgium junior national squad. Crater controlled the tempo in the first period when it took a 10-5 lead, but Belgium quickened the pace and outscored the Comets 17-4 in the second period to grab a 22-14 halftime lead. Crater crept to within four points in the late going but poor free throw shooting -- the Comets made only 4 of 11 attempts in the fourth period and 8 of 18 for the game -- cemented their downfall. Sophomore wing Janel Sapienza contributed five points and eight rebounds for the Comets (5-5), who meet LaGrande today. ASHLAND 83, SOUTH ALBANY 59 -- At Albany, Chelsea Morgan and Jenny Pippa recorded double-doubles for the Grizzlies as they rebounded from Monday night's non-league loss to Willamette. Morgan had 24 points and 13 rebounds and Pippa had 12 points and a game-high 14 assists as Ashland improved to 6-3 overall. NORTH BEND 49, KLAMATH UNION 44 --Sophomore point guard Sarah Davison bombed in five 3-point baskets but it wasn't enough for Klamath Union in an opening-round game of the Klamath Holiday Tournament. North Bend led 42-31 early in the fourth period before the Pelicans mounted a comeback and closed within 47-44 with a minute to play. But the hosts failed to narrow the gap any further and saw their season record fall to 8-2. Andrea Armstrong led North Bend with 15 points and Amanda Lee added 13. NORTH BEND (49) -- Stephens 7, S.
