http://www.omniture.com --> Email Story to a Friend July 20, 2006 Hannon Road closes to prepare for new Wal-Mart in Eagle Point By Jennifer Strange for the Mail Tribune EAGLE POINT — Hannon Road will be closed to through traffic until January as it is moved and widened to ease access for a coming Wal-Mart Supercenter and a business park. "The road's being bumped out to the west to make room for the Wal-Mart," said Sean Mallon, project manager for PacLand, the engineering firm overseeing the business park project. "Right now it cuts through a portion of the Wal-Mart site and it will wrap around the site." Residential- and emergency-vehicle traffic will be allowed on the closed stretch from Nick Young Road to East Linn Road. Water hydrants, sewer lines, storm drains, a curb and gutter, bike lane and a rebuilt storm ditch are on the contractor's task list. A landscape strip will be built between the road and the sidewalk. When finished, the new road will be the sole way to access the Wal-Mart Supercenter. "You'll take a left onto Hannon Road from Highway 62 to get to Wal-Mart," Mallon said. "Or you could take a left onto Nick Young and a right onto Hannon Road and travel north in that direction." Approved by the city in June 2005 after negotiations with Wal-Mart for more than a year, the 184,719-square-foot store will be part of a 25-acre business park between Highway 62 and Hannon Road. CSI Construction of Portland won Wal-Mart's bid for the supercenter project, including the Hannon Road re-alignment. For the frontage road, CSI has subcontracted with Johnny Cat of Jacksonville, which will be responsible for all the site work. "We closed it off today and demolishing should start next week some time," said Mike Gorman, CSI project manager. After demolition, the new road will be built, followed by installation of new utilities and new irrigation work. Setting up the new traffic signal will be the final task, said Gorman. Wal-Mart will not disclose the cost of constructing the supercenter and related roads, said Jennifer Holder of Wal-Mart's community affairs department. Although Wal-Mart will shoulder the major financial burden for re-aligning Hannon Road, funds from the city's systems development charges will pay for the new water line.
