South girls advance in tourney GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL PORTLAND -- Finding themselves with only eight players for their second round game with Sunset, the South Medford girls basketball team was looking to keep the pace a little slower than usual Tuesday night. The Panthers frustrated Sunset the entire game, not allowing the Apollos to establish their run-and-gun style in a 43-33 win at the Central Catholic Tournament. The Panthers advance to face sixth-ranked St. Mary's Academy, who were 57-38 winners over Clackamas, in today's final at 7:30 p.m. But South finds itself even more shorthanded than before in the final since leading scorer Lynn Wooton will be in San Diego during the championship game. "We'll be a little shorthanded," said South Medford coach Andrea Wegner. "But we don't substitute that often anyway, I guess." South Medford (5-4) jumped out early with an 11-4 lead after the first-quarter and were never seriously threatened. "We came out and executed our offense very well," said Wegner. "We played man-to-man defense the entire game and forced them to run their half-court offense." Sunset ventured to the foul-line only two times during the game, connecting on one of them while the Panthers made good on nine of their 10 attempts. Point guard Heather Fossen connected on all five of her attempts. "Most of their offense was from 10 feet and out," said Wegner. "They never really could penetrate on our defense." Wooton led South Medford with 14 points while Fossen added 11 to go along with her four assists and four steals.
