Lupkin, Strain lead way as Pirates rally for win Prep roundup PHOENIX -- Abe Lupkin set the stage and Chris Strain took the final bow as the host Pirates edged Glide, 11-10, in eight innings during Friday's baseball action. Phoenix jumped out to a 7-1 lead after three innings, only to watch Glide roar back with four home runs to take a 10-7 advantage into the bottom of the seventh. Undaunted, the Pirates put forth a rally of their own as Strain doubled and scored on a single by Andy Bartels. The 5-foot-5 Lupkin then stepped to the plate and tied the game with one mighty blast over the fence. "He deserves it," Phoenix coach Joe Hagler said of Lupkin's moment in the sun. "He's such a great kid and works real hard." Drew Pierson singled to continue the rally, but Glide was able to get the next two players out to send the game into extra innings. Pierson would have gotten a call to the mound for the eighth, but an injury suffered earlier in the game left him barely able to walk and forced Hagler's hand into bringing in Jason Denney. "That took some wind out of us because we wanted to throw Drew but we couldn't put him in," the coach said, adding that he had hoped to rest Denney. "The collision he had really hurt his leg." Glide set the table with a single, walk and sacrifice to move a runner into scoring position before Denney halted the threat with two straight outs. Denney opened the eighth with a single and advanced to second following a sacrifice by Jayson Foster. Brandon Lillis slipped a sharp single up the middle to put Denney on third and set up Strain, who followed with the game-winning hit. Lupkin finished the game with four RBIs to pace Phoenix, with Pierson adding three and Bartels chipping in two.
