By 2 a.m. today, that number had more than doubled. The National Weather Service reported 2.02 inches fell on the city over a 24-hour period. The seasonally early rainfall wasn't surprising to meteorologists, just the amount. "It wasn't alike a complete shock for us. We expected certainly a lot of rain in the valley," said meteorologist Mike Petrucelli. "We were surprised we got that much." The amount documented by 5:30 p.m. — 0.99 inches — had already been enough to clobber the city's previous rainfall record for Sept. 24, a comparatively trivial 0.34 inches that fell in 2001. Nearby Yreka also received 2 inches during the same 24-hour time period, while Sexton Mountain saw 1.82 inches. Just under three-quarters of an inch fell on Crater Lake. Onion Mountain, the site of a 4,100-plus acre wildfire that started Sept. 13, received 1.09 inches. That fire is currently 90 percent contained, with full containment expected by Tuesday, Sept. 30, according to the Incident Information System website. The weather system has since pushed on toward the east. Conditions are supposed to taper off today, with loitering clouds and chances for come-and-go showers. A high of 74 degrees is expected for Medford, with a high of 67 degrees expected for Ashland.
