Tornado tops North Eugene Amy Harris has made her mark the past two years, pitching North Eugene into two state finals and one state championship. The Highlanders junior star dominated her first 10 opponents this season, not allowing a run and throwing three perfect games. But after enduring a two-hit shutout in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Fagone Field Wednesday, No. 5 North Medford bounced back from a 1-0 loss to deal the No. 1 Highlanders and Harris their first loss of the spring, 3-0. "Amy Harris is probably the best pitcher in the state," said North Medford coach Sara Barry. "For us to take one away from them is really big for us." Sophomore Kim Sevano allowed a leadoff single to Miranda Dellinger then blanked the Highlanders through six-plus innings before giving way to Steph Coe in the seventh inning. The Black Tornado collected three of its four hits to go with a walk in the bottom of the fifth inning of the second game. Coe singled to start the uprising and took second on Brittany Hillyers sacrifice. Haley Varley drew a walk and Amy Allen promptly made Harris pay for the free pass by launching a triple over center fielder Lori Collins head. Cory Whitaker plated Allen with a single to right field. "What weve been missing is confidence and the girls stepped it up a notch today," Barry said. "We went up there to hit against a real good pitcher. Even though she had quite a few strikeouts in the first game, the girls really battled and took her to 3-2 quite a few times." In the first game, Harris chalked up nine strikeouts and walked two, allowing hits by Coe in the second inning and Hillyer in the seventh. North Eugene scored the only run of the game when Cijay Kaonui singled, advanced on a pair of errors and rode home on Harris base hit to right field.
