Raider stars second team All-Americans ASHLAND -- Junior tailback Griff Yates of Coquille and senior slotback Casey Jackson of Seaside have been named to the NAIA All-American football team. Both were second-team selections. Junior defensive lineman R.J. Josephson of Eagle Point and junior linebacker J.D. Callicoatt of Grants Pass received honorable mention. Yates, the Columbia Football Association offensive player of the year, appeared to have a good shot of landing on the first team after finishing second in the country in rushing (1,594 yards) and scoring (120 points) last season. Yates was a first-team choice in 1997 after posting similar numbers (1,713 yards and 120 points). "I'm very surprised Griff wasn't on the first-team list," SOU coach Jeff Olson said. "He was the top-rated player in the league by the CFA coaches this year and last year. I don't know what more he could have done." Yates is SOU's first repeat selection since linebacker Harvey Childress in 1981 and '82. Yates has rushed for 3,477 yards in his career at SOU and needs only 665 more yards to become the Northwest's all-time leader among small-college runners. Jackson, meanwhile, is second on the SOU career rushing list with 2,481 yards. He also amassed 4,260 all-purpose yards and 24 touchdowns while with the Raiders.
