Medford Americans reach state Staff reports ASHLAND -- The Medford Americans, who came within one win of advancing to the Little League Western Regional last summer, earned a return trip to the state tournament Thursday at Hunter Park with an 11-1 victory over Klamath Falls South Suburban Red in four innings. State is July 31 at Parkrose. Second baseman Mike Barry went 3-for-4 and hit a three-run home run that gave the Americans a 5-2 lead in the second inning. Barry's home run came on a 3-2 pitch he launched to straightaway center field with two outs. He finished with five RBIs. Winning pitcher Kyle Williamson struck out eight and allowed just one hit. Medford collected 12 hits in all. Troy Marsic was 2-for-3, with a triple and double, and had three RBIs. Cole Rohrbough spanked a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning as the Americans scored three times to ice the win. District 8 Baseball NATIONALS WIN -- At Medford National League Fields, Joshua Hill's two-run single in the top of the second gave Rogue River the lead for good en route to a 5-4 win over Central Point in the first round of the 11-12-year-old tourney. In other games, Roseburg scored six runs in the fifth to defeat Medford, 8-3; the Grants Pass Nationals rolled 11-1 over Gold Valley and the Grants Pass Americans defeated Brookings, 4-3. American Legion Baseball COLTS 6-13, EUGENE 4-6 -- At South Medford, Dave Thrapp, Josh Tompkins and Drew Pierson paced the Medford Colts (17-15) to the non-league sweep. Thrapp and Tompkins collected four hits each, while Pierson had two doubles and a triple. Winning pitcher Matt Skundrick checked Josephine County on seven hits, striking out eight. He also swatted a three-run home run in the third inning. Boomer Marshall had four hits and four RBIs for Medford, Clint Rodreick and Jon McCollum two hits and three runs each. Manny Alegria and Matt Smith added two hits apiece.
