Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 12, 2005 Police arrest suspect in connection with seven burglaries By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune A man suspected of burglarizing seven southwest Medford homes was arrested Tuesday after threatening a man with a gun and hiding from police in his attic. Jose Guadalupe Cabral, 19, was jailed on numerous charges for his part in a burglary spree that began on Sept. 16. He allegedly targeted homes during the day when the owners were at work, Medford Lt. Tim George said. Cabral entered the homes through unlocked doors and windows, making off with jewelry, cash and two handguns, George said. Cabral’s streak ended Tuesday afternoon after a neighbor saw him break into a home in the 2300 block of South Columbus Street. The neighbor confronted Cabral outside the home and attempted to detain him. Cabral then produced a .380 semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at the man, George said. The neighbor fled to his home and called 9-1-1. Within minutes Medford police contacted the neighbor and followed Cabral back to his home in the 1000 block of South Stage Road. Advertisement "We believed Cabral was the suspect and that he was armed based on what the neighbor told us," George said. Cabral fled into his home and hid. Police, believing they were facing a lengthy stand-off, set up a perimeter around the residence and closed off South Stage Road, George said. At around 1 p.m. Medford police and Jackson County sheriff’s deputies entered the house and attempted to make contact with Cabral. At that time they didn’t know where he was hiding, however, they soon found a big chunk of plaster had fallen from one section of the ceiling, George said. "That was a pretty good clue he was in the attic," George said. It took police about 45 minutes to talk Cabral into surrendering. He finally emerged from the attic at around 2 p.m. and was arrested without incident, George said. Police found several stolen items in Cabral’s home. The handgun he allegedly used to menace the neighbor was among the loot, George said. "As a result of Cabral’s arrest, seven residential burglaries have been cleared," George said. The streets on which the burglaries occurred are Albion Lane, Agate Street, South Columbus Avenue, South Peach Street, Happy Valley Drive and Garland Place. Cabral was lodged without bail in the Jackson County Jail on six counts of first-degree burglary, first-degree theft, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing and being an illegal alien. An additional count of first-degree robbery is pending. The charge stems from Cabral’s use of a handgun during Tuesday’s burglary, George said.
