The plea from Ramon Cazarez Magdaleno, 34, of Compton, Calif., came moments before his trial was to begin before Judge Ron Grensky. The four Measure 11 crimes each carry a potential 10-year sentence. "You don't get away with shooting at kids on a rooftop. We're not going to put up with this kind of activity in our county," said Senior Deputy District Attorney Allan Smith. Magdaleno originally was charged with eight counts of attempted aggravated murder, eight counts of attempted murder, eight counts of attempted first-degree assault and one count each of third-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. Grensky accepted Magdaleno's "no contest" pleas (which carry the same legal consequences as guilty pleas) and set his sentencing for Friday. Medford police said Magdaleno, a known gang member, was the one firing in a nighttime shooting on North Orange Street in Medford on Aug. 13, 2005. The shooting occurred after a group of teenagers lounging on a rooftop of a home got into a verbal dispute with residents across the alley at another home on Peach Street. Moments later, a burgundy pickup truck pulled into the alley and a Hispanic man inside fired several shots, police said. The teens who were fired upon jumped back inside the building from the rooftop through an upstairs window. One teen was grazed in the back of the head by a bullet. He was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and released, police said. Magdaleno fled to California after the incident. Investigators issued a warrant for his arrest and he was arrested in California after authorities captured him on May 10. Magdaleno remained jailed in Los Angeles until he was extradited to Medford where he has been held on $2 million bail. Reach reporter Sanne Specht at 776-4497 or e-mail [email protected].
