Sergio Ivan Marquez, 30, of Los Angeles, pleaded not guilty in Jackson County Circuit Court Wednesday to charges of first-degree robbery, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, and being a felon in possession of a handgun. Marquez was arrested Jan. 7, more than a month after Jose Velasco, 34, was found dead in his Phoenix home. Detectives said they believe Marquez — who lists a Los Angeles address but has local relatives — had left the Rogue Valley. Police investigators said Marquez gave a handgun to three people who planned to rob Velasco, an attempt that went awry and resulted in his murder on Nov. 30. Marquez was not present at the murder scene, prosecutors said. William Ray Miskell, 26; Jennifer Deetee James, 23; and Christopher Scott Bailey, 19, all were charged with murder, first-degree robbery and conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery. Miskell — the suspected shooter — also was charged with aggravated murder and faces the death penalty if convicted. Miskell, James and Bailey have pleaded not guilty to all charges. Advertisement Investigators said James hatched the robbery plot after Velasco allegedly made unwanted romantic advances toward her at his trailer in Coleman Creek Estates. She left Velasco’s trailer and met up with Miskell and Bailey at a party and enlisted their help in robbing Velasco of cash and drugs she believed he possessed, said Capt. Joe Puckett of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. When Velasco resisted the robbery, he was shot, Puckett said. Medford police detained Marquez after he was reported trespassing earlier this month in the 1500 block of Hancock Avenue. Medford police officer Shannon Reynolds recognized Marquez and detained him until sheriff’s department investigators arrived to arrest him. Miskell, James and Bailey remain in the Jackson County Jail without bail. Marquez is in jail on $50,000 bail.
