Roseburg knocks off Eagle Point, 6-2 EAGLE POINT -- Success has eluded Eagle Point in girls soccer until this season. And the lack of playing meaningful games showed in the Eagles' 6-2 Southern Oregon Conference loss to visiting Roseburg Tuesday. "When you've never been in this position it's hard for the kids to handle it," said Eagle Point coach Tim Sweeney, whose team's two SOC victories surpass the school's previous best. "Our girls got themselves into this hype of beating Roseburg and making the playoffs. They came out tense instead of just having fun." Another factor that doomed the Eagles (7-3-1, 2-2 SOC) was the play of Norwegian foreign exchange student Hedda Gardsjord, who scored three goals. Gardsjord provided the Indians with the game's first two goals at the third and 26th minutes. Then after the Eagles cut the deficit to 4-2 on a pair of Stephanie Lucas goals in the second half, Gardsjord got her hat trick to give the Indians a three-goal cushion. "Finally we started to get inspired after we got down 4-0," said Sweeney. "We played our best soccer of the game when Steph came to life with two straight goals. Then Hedda had enough." Lucas scored both goals within one minute of each other. She converted a penalty kick after being taken down in the box at the 73rd minute mark. One minute later, the high-scoring senior scored her 37th goal of the season and 97th in her prep career. "On the second one, she made a great ball fake," said Sweeney. "She got her defender to go right and quickly turned left and shot. Their goalkeeper didn't even know it was in the back of the net." The Eagles received an inspired performance from junior midfielder Keilah Kruis. "She was controlling the midfield the best I've seen her do," said Sweeney. "She was forcing Roseburg to go to the outside and look for other options. She also kept the team's spirits up even when we were down." GRANTS PASS 2, ASHLAND 1 -- At Ashland, Stacey Seetham scored both goals, including the game-winner early in the second half. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime as both teams tallied goals late in the opening period. Seetham scored on a breakaway at the 38th minute, then Ashland countered on Shey Yearsley goal off an assist from Hanna Seltzer during extra time. Ashland outshot Grants Pass 24-14, but Caver goalie Alicia Pilcher neutralized the Grizzlies by making eight saves. KLAMATH UNION 8, CRATER 0 -- At Klamath Falls, Sara Schaaf notched a hat trick while Danielle Stewart and Brianne Hackett added two goals each. Schaaf scored in the eighth, 15th and 63rd minutes, while Stewart scored in the 16th and 68th minutes. Hackett earned the assist on two Schaaf goals and put her own shots in the net in the 44th and 45th minutes as the Pelicans posted a 24-3 advantage in shots on goal. Sam Gilbert capped the scoring with a goal in the 73rd minute off an assist from Valerie VanBuren. Today's Sports Index Mail Tribune Copyright The Mail Tribune 1999, Medford, OR U.S.A.
