The season will open with Masterworks 1 Oct. 21, 22 and 23 with violinist Jennifer Frautschi performing Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. Frautschi is a two-time Grammy nominee and a recipient of an Avery Fisher career grant. She's garnered worldwide acclaim as an adventurous musician with her wide-ranging repertoire. She's performed as a soloist with Pierre Boulez and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Christoph Eschenbach and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival, and at Wigmore Hall and Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival. Maestro Majkut will open the program with "Anadyomene," or "Adoration of Aphrodite" by contemporary Finnish composer Einojahani Rautavaara. The program will close with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony. Masterworks 2 will be Nov. 11, 12 and 13 and showcase Russian pianist Alexander Ghindin for Franz Liszt's "Totentanz" and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini." The orchestra will play two other works by the same composers: Liszt’s "Mazeppa" and Rachmaninoff’s "The Isle of the Dead." Ghindin, who was named Honored Artist of Russia, was the youngest-ever laureate of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. In 1999 he gained a second prize at the International Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition in Brussels. In 2007, he was a first-prize winner at the International Piano Competition in Cleveland. The symphony's holiday concerts, to be presented Dec. 1, 2 and 3, will continue the tradition of performing George Frideric Handel’s "Messiah" with the Southern Oregon Repertory Singers. This year Majkut will present a slightly different offering for holiday audiences than last season; the Christmas portion of "Messiah" and the “Hallelujah Chorus” will be played in conjunction with John Rutter’s "Magnificat." Masterworks 3 will be presented Jan. 27, 28 and 29. Central European music will dominate this set of concerts with Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” and the U.S. premiere of Slovakian composer Marian Lejava’s "Candide." Israeli pianist Alon Goldstein will perform Bela Bartok’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the orchestra. Goldstein has played with the Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Baltimore, St. Louis, Dallas, Houston, and Vancouver symphonies as well as the Israel, London, Radio France and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestras, under the baton of such conductors as Zubin Mehta, Herbert Blomstedt, Vladimir Jurowski, Rafael Frübeck de Burgos, Peter Oundjian, Yoel Levi, Leon Fleisher and others. Masterworks IV will be Feb. 24, 25 and 26, and will feature trumpeter Dan Kocurek on two works: Sergei Vasilenko’s Concerto Poem for Trumpet and Astor Piazzolla’s "Libertango." Two standard masterworks round out this series: Ludwig van Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3 and Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4. Canadian-American trumpeter Kocurek, who is new to the Rogue Valley, was lead trumpet in the world-renowned Dallas Brass. He has appeared as soloist with the Vancouver Bach Choir, the Pro Nova Ensemble, the West Coast Symphony and the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra. Kocurek leads the trumpet studio at Southern Oregon University, and is lead trumpet with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The Masterworks 5 season finale will be May 5, 6 and 7 and include two big choral works: Mozart’s "Requiem" and Beethoven’s "Choral Fantasy." Both works will feature the Southern Oregon Repertory Singers, conducted by Paul French. The concert will open with Jean Sibelius' "Valse Triste" from Kuolema, and pianist Jodi French will perform the solo in the Beethoven piece. Majkut will begin his sixth season as artistic leader of the orchestra. Under his leadership, RVSO has grown in artistry, audiences and community support. Named a 2016 Emerging Artist by the League of American Orchestras, Majkut has served RVS since 2010. Born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia), he graduated from the State Conservatory in orchestral conducting and piano performance and served as assistant conductor of the Slovak Philharmonic while earning his doctorate in conducting at the Academy of Performing Arts. Majkut’s relationship with the Slovak Philharmonic opened doors for him to additional Slovak orchestras: The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, Slovak State Philharmonic and the Slovak Sinfonietta, among others. Majkut went to the University of Arizona as a Fulbright scholar in 2003, where he earned a second doctorate in 2008. While in Tucson, he served as the resident conductor of the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra and the Arizona Opera Studio Artist in Conducting. Majkut studied with Gianluigi Gelmetti at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy, and Salvador Mas Conde at the Wiener Meisterkurse in Vienna, Austria. His other engagements include conducting "Into the Woods" at the Wallis Annenberg Center in Beverly Hills, Calif., and at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland.
