Phoenix defeated The Breeze from Redmond, Wash., 3-0, in a pool play game earlier in the day. After receiving a bye in the opening round of the double-elimination portion of the tournament, Phoenix blanked Dragon Magic of Montesano, Wash., 4-0, to remain one of eight unbeaten teams remaining in the tournament. Phoenix, a team made up of players from throughout the Rogue Valley, plays The Storm of Surrey, B.C. in the quarterfinals at 1:15 p.m. today. Janelle Cristofaro pitched a three-hit shutout, with nine strikeouts, against Dragon Magic in a game that ended in the bottom of the fifth due to a time limit. Advertisement "Janelle changed her speeds well," Phoenix coach Bill Shearin said. "She has efficiently worked the umpire’s strike zone." Cristofaro also threw a shutout in the Pirates’ opening game of pool play on Thursday. Marissa Towry’s RBI single staked Cristofaro to a first-inning run against Dragon Magic and that’s all the Crater High product needed. Phoenix third baseman Lacey Scroggins had two hits and two stolen bases. Phoenix pitchers Andrea Bacon and Kelsey Heider combined for a six-inning, two-hit shutout in the Pirates’ first game Friday against The Breeze. Phoenix broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning on a leadoff walk to Alex Jordahl, a sacrifice by Towry and Shannon Richardson’s triple. Jill Artoff followed with an RBI single. Richardson had two hits in the game for Phoenix. "The girls are playing clean ball and look balanced in the batter’s box," said Shearin. "We continue to produce all the way through the lineup."
