Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 23, 2005 Panthers edge Eagles in electric match South Medford withstood an untimely power outage and an energetic Eagle Point squad in a nip-and-tuck Southern Oregon Conference volleyball battle Thursday night at South Medford High. Despite dropping the first two games 27-25 and 25-21 to the Eagles, the Panthers roared back 25-19, 25-16, 18-16 to claim a hard-fought victory in a match delayed by a power surge during the opening point of the fifth game. While the lights themselves were only out for a matter of seconds, it took about 10 minutes for them to generate up to full power so the match could continue. "It was an up and down night for us all night," said South coach Adam Wagman. Eagle Point was able to regroup after two straight losses during the power outage and showed renewed vigor in taking leads of 10-5 and 13-8 in the pivotal fifth game. It was at that point when Wagman called his final timeout and tried to regroup his troops for a final run. Advertisement "At that point it was about not worrying about what needs to happen two plays from now but focusing on the next play and how everybody would have a chance to make a play at some point," the coach said of his advise. "And to the girls’ credit, they went out and did just that. They went out and made aggressive plays to win." South Medford middle hitters Tori Glover and Chenoa Coviare led the charge with 19 and 17 kills, respectively, while Emily Marshall had 26 digs and Peggy Thompson added 23 digs to pull off the comeback. "We just showed a tremendous amount of resiliency," said Wagman. Eagle Point jumped on South (4-5, 2-3 SOC) early in the first game and hung on for the win, then did much of the same in the second as the Eagles dictated the action with their solid play. "It wasn’t a lot of what we weren’t doing," Wagman said of the opening games, "it was what they were doing. They just played great team defense. We couldn’t find any chink in their armor." Wagman said the key to South’s turnaround was its ability to match the high energy level put forth by the Eagles. "They’re a team that plays with so much energy that if you don’t match it, you’re going to be down three or four points before you know it," he said of EP. ASHLAND 3, CRATER 0 — At Crater, second-ranked Ashland added to its unbeaten streak with a 25-9, 25-13, 25-15 victory over Crater in SOC action. Natalie Lefler tallied nine digs and six aces to lead the Grizzlies (8-0, 5-0 SOC). Ashland also got strong showings from Maddison Thivierge (11 kills) and Ruby Stocking (10 digs). NORTH MEDFORD 3, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Klamath Falls, Lauren Berger dropped in 11 kills and added four blocks to help North Medford cruise to victory, 25-17, 25-15, 25- 11. The Black Tornado’s fast-paced offensive scheme kept Klamath Union off balance the entire match, which helped North Medford maintain momentum throughout. Whitney Hodnett had seven kills and Holly Higgins pitched in with seven digs for North Medford (7-2, 4-1 SOC). GRANTS PASS 3, ROSEBURG 2 — At Grants Pass, sisters Ashley and Amber Franko provided solid all-around efforts for Grants Pass and Kim Gonzales punctuated the match with her 10th kill to lead the Cavers to a 25-17, 25-20, 18-25, 20-25, 17-15 triumph. Ashley Franko, a senior, paced Grants Pass (3-2 SOC) with 12 kills and 26 digs, while sophomore Amber Franko was steady on defense with 20 digs and Gonzales, a senior, added 20 digs. Chelsey Chamberlain also chipped in with 23 digs for the Cavers, who withstood several charges by the Emily Waldron-led Indians in the pivotal fifth game. Skyline Volleyball HENLEY 3, PHOENIX 0 — At Phoenix, Henley swept Phoenix 25-20, 25-10, 26-24 to remain undefeated with a 4-0 record in Skyline Conference play. Phoenix senior middle hitter Kelsey Nelson provided 13 kills and six blocks, while going a perfect 12-for-12 from the service line. Senior setter Jessica Robinson collected 21 assists and nine digs and Emily Lubonski went 14-for-14 serving in the loss for Phoenix (6-4, 1-2 Skyline). HIDDEN VALLEY 3, ROGUE RIVER 0 — At Murphy, Hidden Valley remained undefeated as the Mustangs (5-0, 3-0 Skyline) swept Rogue River 25-14, 25-20, 25-20 in conference action. Jessica Miller contributed 14 digs, Chelsea Westlake had six kills and Kaitlyn Hoffman had six aces for Rogue River (0-5, 0-3 Skyline). MAZAMA 3, NORTH VALLEY 0 — At Klamath Falls, Danielle Stratton closed out the third game with 10 straight points to help Mazama sweep in the Skyline Conference match, 25- 11, 25-7, 25-11. The Vikings’ Adri Inman contributed 30 assists and had three service aces, while Karen Libby had 16 straight points in the second game to help Mazama pull away. Jessica Gavina added 10 kills and had two blocks for the Vikings (4-1, 3-1 Skyline). Nonconference Volleyball CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, COQUILLE 2 — At Coquille, Cascade Christian took control in the fourth and fifth games to come from behind in the nonconference match, 18-25, 25-10, 23-25, 25-10, 15-8. Melissa Gmur had team-highs of 14 kills, 18 assists, 12 digs and added two aces to lead the Challengers. Erika Thorpe had nine kills, 13 assists, six digs and three aces, while Megan Brown tallied 13 kills and three aces for Cascade Christian (3-1, 1-0 SCL). YREKA 3, ST. MARY’S 0 — At Yreka, Yreka defeated St. Mary’s 25-21, 21-12, 27-25 in nonconference action. Senior outside hitter Kelsey Reedy led the Crusaders (3-6, 0-1 SCL) with 10 digs and six kills. St. Mary’s also received 19 digs from Tia Khachitthet and 16 assists from setter Cynthia Naumes. BROOKINGS-HARBOR 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1 — At Brookings, Brookings-Harbor edged Illinois Valley 25-17, 18-25, 25-19, 25-17 in the nonconference match. The Cougars’ Emily Dudley had a solid all-around performance, totaling 27 assists, seven aces and seven kills in the loss. Erika Riley provided 22 kills and seven aces, while Leilani Tausaga added seven kills for Illinois Valley (1-3, 1-2 Skyline). Water Polo ASHLAND EARNS SWEEP — At Ashland, the Medford girls water polo team opened the season Wednesday with a 14-5 loss to Ashland at Southern Oregon University pool. Lakin Rigby had two goals and Hillary Burrelle added another for Medford, while Jenni Osmanski had seven blocks in goal. The Medford boys also tasted defeat, dropping a 20-2 decision to Ashland. Landon Nistler and Lance Abbott provided the lone Medford goals. Goalies Jason Flinn and Brad Doll had five and six blocks, respectively.
